Dolls

Maggie doesn't have any dolls. I didn't think it was a big deal, because she happily plays with whatever Cam is playing with. But. For the past few weeks, I keep getting reports from daycare about Maggie and her friend J sending the whole afternoon covering the dolls with quilts and rubbing their backs, sitting them in the kitchen and feeding them and basically just carrying the dolls around. So I started looking into a doll for Maggie.

I hate the plastic ones. The combo plastic/cloth ones seem a little creepy. And then, last night I went to a friends house who has four girls and she showed me the Waldorf dolls that her kids used to play with. Oh. My. God. They are SO tactile and sweet and PERFECT. So I started looking around to buy one - minimum $100. Not happening. (But of course, shopping around made me want them more - look here and here and here).

I called a crafty friend of mine, and it turns out she LOVES making dolls and used to teach a class! So I'm buying a pattern and we'll embark on this journey together.

I then started looking a sweater patterns for the doll. I have a feeling I may need to make myself a doll too.

ME! I WANT A WALDORF DOLL TOO! I have been drooling over them for the longest time. So, invent that teleportation thing I've been talking about and I will come make dolls with you too.

If you want some cheap fabric ones, IKEA has just come out with three fabric dolls for $10 each or something like that.

And speaking of Waldorf dolls, here's the one I want to get for Elizabeth now: http://www.bellalunatoys.com/waldorf-dolls/waldorf-dolls/heavy-baby-doll.html And then I want this one when she gets bigger: http://www.bellalunatoys.com/waldorf-dolls/waldorf-dolls/waldorf-doll-16-inch-dress-up-doll.html

WHOA. Those things are expensive! How much do you think the materials are to make your own?

My oldest wasn't into dolls, but my youngest sure loves her babies. Maybe I'll have to make her one of these someday.

Wow! Those are some expensive dolls. I think we will stick to our cheap plastic/cloth dolls from the store. :D They work just as well as a $215 doll. :)

Hello, this is Nadine from Wooly Roo Dolls. Thank you for linking some of my dolls! Waldorf dolls are expensive, but they take about 15 hours to make and the materials are quite costly. They are special in so many ways: no plastic permanent smile allows the child to image the doll happy, sad, angry, etc; their peaceful face is very calming; they are stuffed with wool which has so many benefits (warming, anti bacterial...).I wish that every child had one of these dolls, made by me, someone else or their parent. All the best in your doll making experience!

have you seen the manhattan toy stella dolls? also extremely cute & loads less expensive. (no, they're not quite asawesome as the waldorf dolls, but maybe a good sub until you get yours made?)

I also want to second the Stella doll as an option. My almost 2yr old loves her and she is just the right proportion. Bonus you can was her if needed!
