Baby signing

I must admit, when I heard of people doing baby signs or baby videos that help their babies learn to talk (at 6 months, seriously? SERIOUSLY?!!?) I thought it was totally silly. Why put pressure on the poor kid - they find ways to communicate on their own, right? And yes, for the most part, Hulk does do that. But at daycare, they do a few signs, like the one for 'all done' and I really think he gets that. I use it for when I think he's all done with dinner, and if he's messing around looking at the dogs or whatever, and isn't all done, he'll open up for another bite.

I see the usefulness now. Do any of you all do signing with your little one? I'd be interested to know if you use it a lot or not.

So, I signed up for a class in Baby Signs at Nini Bambini on Monday. It's Columbus Day, so I've got the day off, and daycare is closed. Even if the class is a bomb, Hulk and I love visiting Nina, so I'm excited. Anyone from the area interested? Call Nini and sign up and let me know if you are coming! I think it'll be fun.

I don't have a baby but I would imagine that it actually eases the pressure - I mean - a sign has to be better than screaming in frustration because Mummy doesn't understand!!

I have an 18 month old I babysit (I'm 23)her parents have signed with her since she was tiny and it is wonderful, She can tell you when she's hungry, done , that she loves you, and has picked up a new one of patting her bottom before using her diaper, her parents think she will be potty trained before she is two... It really makes her a happy baby; Good Luck :-)

What timing! I seriously just started signing to Elizabeth two days ago. We are doing "more", "all done", "milk", "cup", and "cereal." And when I say we are doing, I mean I am signing and she is looking at me crazy. But I had noticed that she was starting to lean over her high chair and kind of whine towards her cup or the cereal box, so I figured she was ready. I'll let you know.

I started signing with my daughter at about six months and it worked great. It was great to be able to have her tell me what she wanted instead of just having a melt down.
She's two now and we still occasionally sign if she isn't listening or we can't get her to focus, for some reason that gets her to tune in.

As you know, we are signing a LOT with WB, and it has been a Godsend, as it is still her primary means of expression. I really recommend the "Signing Time" videos ... they're really well done. You can probably check them out of the library, if you're interested.

I also recommend the "signing times" videos. It has made an amazing difference with my son and his ability to communicate his wants. If Cameron wants another banana he tells me, no guessing or tantrums. I can't imagine what life would be like without the signing communication. And it doesn't delay speech no matter what anyone says. Cameron is now at the point of saying the words with the signs. Plus it is fun to have our own "language" with him.

we found signing to be very helpful with the kidlets!

Backing up the assertion that signing with your child doesn't delay speech, studies have shown that signing with your child actually promotes language development (http://www.child-psych.org/2009/04/will-teaching-my-baby-to-sign-delay-his.html).

Hope you enjoy your class!

Oh, as in signing for babies! I thought maybe you were having a baby-signing party where, for a suitable fee, we would be able to sign Hulk in indelible ink.
