Let's talk tattoos

Somebody mentioned a while back that they got their babies footprints as a tattoo. I thought that was such a cool idea that I told Aaron - who LOVED it. Nora's footprint is one of the few things we have of her. We only have a handful of pictures, the outfit she came home in - it just seems right. He is planning on getting all three babies footprints (taken from when they were born) tattooed life sized up the back of his calf (like they are walking up his leg). He's going to do order of birth, so Cam's right foot, Nora's left, and then Maggie's right. He is still deciding if he'll put names under each footprint or in it or whatever.

I want to get the same thing, yet smaller - and not on my calf. Now - this is where I need help. Opinions? Remember that I'm not small - and there are rather unfortunate stretch marks on my belly from bearing 3 children in 2 years. I was thinking right over my heart.... but then I'm not sure. I already have one tattoo on my hip. I'm a bit hesitant on putting it somewhere it'll be seen every day - but I'm considering it.

Help?

ETA: For tattoo size - I'm thinking SMALL like smaller than a quarter, same idea as Aaron's (each child's footprint like they are walking). Now I'm leaning towards wrist or ankle.....

Love this idea! How about on your ankle so it could be easily covered with a sock if necessary? Seriously LOVE THIS!

How visible do you want it to be? I would probably do something like walking up my shoulder blade or something like that. Good luck!

My neice has her daughters on her foot with her name. I would do my back. Don't know if you already have an artist that you use but about time tatto in south nashua is fab. Kevin is the owner. It is usually 2 visits - one to discuss what you want and a second to do the tat. It is cool if you do them life size (from birth) then they can put the lines etc. Very cool idea. Good luck.

What a cool idea!!!

Do you want to do life size? Do you need to see it every day? That will dictate where you want it. I have two tattoos, one on my shoulder and one in the small of my back, and I RARELY see the one in the small of my back. I'd suggest your shoulder or ankle.

We also have a fab guy in Seabrook - Jim of Jim's tattoos. We love him - he did both Jeff and my tattoos. :)

You also have to consider whether YOU want to be able to easily see it and/or how easily you want others to be able to.

Lower back is a good spot, but you won't be able to see it. If you decide to do it on a breast, placement is key (as do you want one footprint (all? none?) to be seen if in a V-neck or scoop neck or tank top, or none.

I have several tattoos but only one is visible and it's above my ankle bone on my inner left leg. That might be a good spot (if you are doing a smaller version).

I'm also a fan of right over where the ovary is (so, below the underwear line and above the hip bone). I have a good scene there and it was not too painful.

It is what it is said...

Hahaha

The "It" comment was from me. Typing too quickly!

Are you doing all 3 kids footprints and how large? I have my middle name (all 1st born females in my family have the same middle name - Faith) on my wrist (on the wrinkles below my palm).. I love it. I am a big'un also so I have a lot of skin and stretch marks on my body also. I so follow you! ;)(Hence the tat on the wrist)

You may want just a tiny thumbprint size of Nora's feet print there on the wrist. There you can see it. But, if you feel you need to cover it up for work or what ever - I suggest your inside of your heel (right below the ankle bone). yes it hurts there.. but it is a great spot to keep it private.

I can shoot you photos of mine if you are remotely interested.

There's my 2 cents. :D

yup, like Shari I want to suggest the wrist. I just got my kids initials in braille dots on the inside of my left wrist. Coverable with a watch or bracelet, but still visible to me. what a gorgeous idea, your kids footprints. so sweet.

There are tons of ideas. back of shoulder would be my best guess, followed by breast.

Also, don't be surprised when the artist wants to make it bigger in order to fully make it work.

I have five tattoos - a star behind my ear, an elephant with "life's not a paragraph, and death I think is no parathesis" on the middle of my upper back, "unique" on my left wrist, "beauty" on my right wrist, and a messed up heart with 2 baby feet inside on my left breast.

All are very easy to hide, and I'm a big girl so that went into choosing the locations as well.

The elephant I originally wanted on my shoulder blade, but it had to be moved due to the size. :) I think it's an awesome idea.

Have you seen the Dixie Chicks tattoos? They have little chick feet on their feet to commemorate career milestones. Pretty nice since it's not completely hidden away 24/7 year round, but if the need arises it's not blaring in front of the boss-man.

That is such a cute idea. I don't have any good ideas, but I think it sounds adorable.

The foot prints will be beautiful. I am waiting for an appointment to get my memorial tattoo done. I too have destroyed my midsection by having 2 big babies (and hopefully there will be one more). I think mine is going to be on the inside of my bicep, easy to hide or to show when I want and when I cross my arms, it will be close to my heart.

You know, I don't have a tattoo, and, until this moment, could never have imagined getting one. Though I still don't think it's in the cards for me, I LOVE the footprints idea for you. I keep coming back to an image of them marching around on your ankle, their little footsteps close to yours.

I'm enjoying my visit to your blog.

Be well,
Michelle

I LOVE the idea of a footprint tattoo, and I thought long and hard about getting one for a while. But, I would want one to be small, life size for my 27 weeker, and that size would not age well. Friends of mine got smallish tattoos in college, flowers and such, and now, 15 years later, they look like blobs. I do not want my son's footprint to look like a blob, and I don't want a tattoo big enough to prevent it from looking bloblike in the future. So, I need to go with plan B, which is to get some sort of ornament made out of his footprint.

I still think the footprint idea is so cool, and hope you will post pictures if/when you get it done!

What a nice idea. As for you, back of shoulders would probably be a great place. We want to see pictures when they're done!

Thanks for stopping by my blog and your kind words. I decided to get a remembrance tattoo on my foot and I LOVE it! I got our daughters initials and cherry blossom flowers as these symbolize the fragility of life. Love the idea of the footprints, one of my other friends did that and hers looks beautiful!

Here is the link to my tattoo I had done for my kiddos on my feet. I like that I can look down and see it at any time. If I'm going to go through the pain, I want to be able see it without having to twist and turn in a mirror.

This is such a wonderful idea. I am not a big tattoo person I guess mostly because I would never want to commit to something on my body forever.. BUT if I ever got a tattoo it would be something relating to my family!
